Editing

When I got home from filming I imported all of my clips onto my computer and made a new project on Adobe Premiere Pro CC. I Imported all of the clips into the sequence and started to pick out the best chips that I could potentially use.  I didn't really start to edit until Friday because I was on a three hour flight and decided that during the flight would be a good time to get all of my editing out to the way.

Geoffrey, with the new plot, is a combination of a protagonist and an antagonist.  He is first shown as been recently murdered, but at the end of the opening he will come back to life. He has been giving a second chance to kill everyone that has wronged him in his past but in doing so he is looked as a monster/villain.

I decided on the opening shot because it shows Geoffrey but still leaving a lot of curiosity to what has happened.  It was a low angle wide shot with the entire bottom third covered with grass.  I thought this was a good shot to insert the first title because there was this empty space that could use something in it.  We wanted to end with a cliffhanger so we got a point of view shot of him waking up, looking at his hands, and pulling out the knife in his arm.  This shot then cut to a low angle wide shot of Geoffrey getting up and walking out of frame leaving a sense of wonder to what he will do now that he has come back from the dead.  The last five seconds are for the full screen title “Geoffrey”, in the Libian SC font,  which is the name of the film.

Shooting

Now that we are finally back together we can get back on track with this project.  We both decided on Markham park as our filming location, so we grabbed all of the props and headed out.

When we got there we had this idea to, not make Geoffrey the bad guy in this film but instead make him the guy that was just murdered.  I know, you guys are probably thinking.  How can your main actor be dead?  There is the twist.  At the beginning all the audience would see is a dead guy and be listening to a new report about this murder that just went on.  This well tell the audience that this is an essential person in this movie but that wont be expecting for him to be alive.  We would end this two minute opening with a cliffhanger not fully telling the viewer what is going on to give it more of a mystery.

So we started filming and this is what my set up looked like and here are some photos of our production process.

Music

When I got back from my trip I was looking for something to do for this project because, luck would have it, the day I came back from a trip my partner left, so we once again had to postpone our filming day.

I decided to look for some music as empathic sound.  I knew what I generally wanted. Nothing with words and something to convey the mood in the right way.  I first began listening to the different types of music that the Youtube Audio Library had.  After basically listening to their entire dark category, I still couldn't find what I was looking for.  I then moved on to a website called Epidemic Sound.  After looking through this websites dark category and still finding nothing I was about to call it a day when I just decided to type “scary” in the search bar.  Not actually thinking that it was going to find me any better music than I had already heard, I clicked search, and the first song I clicked on was definitely the one. It was called “scary hospital”. At the end of my searching I came down to two songs (Scary Hospital and Scary Tunnels) but that I don't want to decide on until I had Charlie's opinion on them.

Deliberation

After much deliberation we plained out what each scene of out opening will be.

The opening shot is a extreme close up of a mans (Geoffrey) glasses and on the reflection is the news playing from the television.  Diegetic sound of the news will be talking about how there was a murder and they are looking for a man and describing what people believe he looked like. As that is playing the extreme close up will zoom out revealing that the man sitting in the chair wearing the glasses is Geoffrey. While the camera is zooming out it there will be cut aways to the crime scene at different parts of the opening to show what Geoffrey did.  The murder scene is in the woods and there is a dead body under a tarp with blood everywhere.  There will be police tape along the outside of the crime scene to create more of a sense of realism to the situation.  At the end, when it is revealed that the man is Geoffrey, he turns off the television and smiles at the camera then the room goes pitch black and the title of the move (Geoffrey) comes up.

Since we are running out of time we plan on filming during the week and editing in the middle of shooting both scene.  I am confident on my editing skills and that I will get it done in time and make something I would be proud of.

More Research

Because I am still out of town, I decided to continue doing research.

I came across this video, “Opening Shots Tell Us Everything," which shares why an opening shot is very important in a movie or film.  It shows examples of great opening shots from movies like Silver Linings Playbook and The Silence of the Lambs, which are both compacted with information about the characters and the plot.  I learned that the opening shot's goal is to show as much information about the movies in as little time possible.  For example, in The Silence of the Lambs we find out that the main character is in the middle of an obstacle in her life and is working to overcome it.  She is training to be in the FBI to help other people overcome their own obstacles.  All of this informations is portrayed in a 10-15 second clip.

For my opening shot, I plan on showing the murderer (Geoffrey) sitting in a chair watching news coverage of a murder that has just occurred.  The news will be talking about the description of the murderer and this will lead the viewers to believe that the murderer is Geoffrey.
